II HISTORY AND ADMINISTRATION
In 1636 a college was founded in Cambridge by the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It was opened for instruction two years later and named in 1639 for English clergyman John Harvard, its first benefactor. The college at first lacked substantial endowments and existed on gifts from individuals and the General Court. Harvard gradually acquired considerable autonomy and private financial support, becoming a chartered university in 1780. Today it has the largest private endowment of any university in the world.
Harvard has steadily developed under the great American educators who have successively served as its presidents. During the presidency of Charles W. Eliot (1869-1909), Harvard established an elective system for undergraduates, by which they could choose most of their courses themselves. Under Abbott L. Lowell, who was president from 1909 to 1933, the undergraduate house systems of residence and instruction were introduced. Academic growth and physical expansion continued during the tenures of James B. Conant (1933-1953), Nathan M. Pusey (1953-1971), and Derek C. Bok (1971-1991). Neil L. Rudenstine was appointed president in 1991.
Sponsored by Henry Rosovsky, former dean of the faculty of arts and sciences (1973-1984), the undergraduate elective system, or General Education Program, was replaced in 1979 by a Core Curriculum intended to prepare well-educated men and women for the challenges of modern life. Students are now required to take courses for the equivalent of an academic year in each of five areas: literature and arts, history, social analysis and moral reasoning, science, and foreign cultures. In addition to the new curriculum, students must spend roughly the equivalent of two years on courses in a field of concentration and one year on elective courses. Students must also demonstrate competence in writing, mathematics, and a foreign language.
From its earliest days Harvard established and maintained a tradition of academic excellence and the training of citizens for national public service. Among many notable alumni are the religious leaders Increase Mather and Cotton Mather; the philosopher and psychologist William James; and men of letters such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, James Russell Lowell, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Robert Frost, and T. S. Eliot. More U.S. presidents have attended Harvard than any other college: John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy. A sixth, Rutherford B. III UNDERGRADUATE ACTIVITIES
Harvard College, the university’s oldest division, offers undergraduate courses for men and women, leading to a bachelor of arts degree granted by the university. Beginning in 1963, graduates of Radcliffe College, the affiliated undergraduate institution for women, received Harvard degrees with the Radcliffe seal and countersigned by the president of Radcliffe. In the 1970s, Harvard abolished the quota limiting the number of women students, and a joint Harvard and Radcliffe Admissions Office began selecting students on an equal basis. In 1999 Harvard fully absorbed Radcliffe and created the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, which focuses on the study of women and gender. With admission criteria ranking among the most selective in the United States, Harvard accepts less than 20 percent of all applicants; three-fourths of those accepted actually enroll.
During their freshman year, students live in halls within Harvard Yard, a walled enclosure containing several structures from the early 18th century now used as dormitories, dining facilities, libraries, and classrooms. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors live in the 12 residences known as houses. Named in honor of a distinguished alumnus or administrator, each house accommodates approximately 350 students and a group of faculty members who provide individual instruction as tutors, fostering social and intellectual exchange between students and teachers. Each house also has a library and sponsors cultural activities and intramural athletics. Undergraduate life has the additional attraction of proximity to Boston.
IV GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL FACILITIES
Harvard’s graduate and professional facilities, founded over the last 200 years, include schools of arts and sciences, business administration, dental medicine, design, divinity, education, law, medicine, public administration (now the John Fitzgerald Kennedy School of Government), and public health. Special studies programs are also provided at the Harvard-Yenching Institute; the John K. Fairbank Center for East Asian Research; the Kathryn W. and Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Russian Studies; and at the centers for Middle Eastern Studies, International Affairs, International Legal Studies, Energy and International Policy, and Health Policy Management.
V SPECIAL FACILITIES

Harvard’s library system is the oldest in the United States. The central library collection, used for advanced scholarly research, is housed in the Harry Elkins Widener Memorial Library. Undergraduate publications include the Harvard Crimson, a daily newspaper founded in 1873; the Harvard Advocate, a literary review; and a nationally known humor magazine, the Harvard Lampoon. The principal educational goal of the Visual and Environmental Studies Department (VES) is to provide students in a liberal arts college with an opportunity to gain an understanding of visual art and expression through both study and practice. The department aims to foster a dialogue among makers, critics, and theorists, and accordingly its faculty comprises individuals representing all of these areas. The courses they offer fall into several areas, including the studio arts, photography, filmmaking, film studies, environmental studies, and critical theory. The department’s symbolic and functional home is the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, built in 1963, and is the only building designed by Le Corbusier in North America. The building contains art studios, photography darkrooms, film and video screening facilities, faculty offices, and departmental administrative offices. Additionally, the department occupies space in the top floor and the lower level of Sever Hall, which contains faculty offices, film and video editing equipment, film and video screening facilities, as well as an extensive Film Study Library.
All curricular areas within the concentration begin with an introductory program, then move to more advanced courses and may culminate in a thesis or senior-year tutorial. A course of study can be tailored to accommodate the demands of any visual or theoretical approach to art practice.
Students apply to concentrate in VES; and in order to be accepted students must do two things. 1. They must take a course in the department, preferably one related to their area of interest. That course must be taken in advance of the application. 2. They must also maintain a B average. For those wishing to apply to the studio and film/video areas, an introductory studio or production course is required in advance of the application. For assistance in choosing an appropriate first course, students are encouraged to consult with the Director of Undergraduate Studies, the Director of Undergraduate Studies for Film Studies (for those interested in a focus on Film Studies), or the department’s the Academic Services Coordinator.
Ordinarily, introductory-level courses in VES are designated with 2-digit course numbers and more advanced courses with 3-digit course numbers. Those interested in the studio area can choose from among several introductory courses in the studio arts and photography, which are generally course numbers VES 10-49. Students interested in the film/video area should take a course in photography, video, or animation, which are generally course numbers VES 40-59(Note: VES 50, the year-long introductory filmmaking course, is ordinarily taken by concentrators in their sophomore year). Students interested in Film Studies should take Literature & Arts B-11, (The Art of Film); VES 71 (Silent Cinema), or VES 72 (Sound Cinema). These three courses are required and either offers an excellent introduction to the Film Studies track.
There is no formal tutorial program in VES. Since most VES courses are small studio courses or seminars with close interactions between students and faculty, preparation for a senior thesis is begun in these studios and seminars and is often carried to completion in a VES 99 tutorial during the senior year.

is because fashion helps describe you as a person, everyone has their own
interpretation of fashion, and becoming a fashion buyer would not only be a
dream job, it would be an exhilarating journey. I would love to travel the world
and view amazing collections, or just to meet other people as passionate about
the industry as I am. My favorite designers currently are Kim Jones, topman
design and Paul Smith, who I admire deeply and all make spectacular menswear
collections, I admire them because they are young fresh and are the future of
men’s fashion.
After some illness during my school years, I stayed on for a year in sixth
form to complete more GCSE’s and now I am at college which I adore. I have
learnt a lot about the fashion business at college such as finance and
marketing, aswell at leadership styles. I was also taught about and how people
use fashion as communication and stereotypes formed from how we dress. Through
studying at college I gained more self motivation and independence which ill
need at university.
I have had over 2 years of work experience in retail fashion by working
part time at Sports World where I have been employed since 2005.Working there I
have gained management, organizational and social skills which are all
beneficial to the world of fashion and management. I know how to operate in all
the different areas of the business including delivery, customer service and
merchandising, which I think would be useful in a fashion management/buying
degree because I will have some previous hands on experience.
Millennium volunteers club is a volunteer agency for young people which I
am proudly part of. My volunteer life started at Age concern when I was 15,
where i learnt a lot about fashion and merchandising as management left me
charge to choose which of the donated clothes were suitable for the shop floor,
this placement for 3 months. I also volunteered for MENCAP daybreak scheme which
is a summer placement helping disabled children undertake fun activities during
the school holidays, here I learnt a lot about teamwork and management during
this time, finally I was a classroom assistant at ********* primary school. This
shows a more socially aware and caring side to me.
The business side of fashion is where I want to be involved, so fashion
management and buying is the route I want to pursue. I currently am completing a
piece of business A2 coursework where I am opening my own retail fashion shop
which I am very excited about. My hobbies and interests outside of work and
college are music sociology, dance, formula 1 and athletics. In the past I have
been members of ******* football club and ******** swimming and Athletics
teams.
I think I would be very suitable for a place on your course because I’m
hard working, dedicated and I think I would be able to cope with university
life. I am always buying fashion magazines, watching fashion TV or just shopping
and buying clothes in general in my spare time. I realise fashion buying is
about staying ahead of the game and having great organization skills which I
believe I have. I feel I have the flair to really achieve my full potential at
university.
